Answer:

Let us consider the path from A to B is a straight line path.

The distance from A to B is 300 m in the east direction, which is covered by Joseph in 2 mins 50 secs,

That is, [(2*60) + 50] seconds = 170 secs.

Therefore,

a) The aveage speed from A to B is Total distance travelled/ Total time taken

= 300m/170 s

= 1.76 m/s

Now, velocity = Total displacement/ total time taken

= 300m/170s

= 1.76 m/s

Thus, the velocity from A to B is 1.76 m/s towards East.

Now, the distance from B to C is 100 m in the west direction, which is covered by Joseph in 1 min (60 secs).

Therefore, the total distance travelled = 300 + 100 = 400 m

And, the total time taken = 170 + 60 = 230 secs

b) The aveage speed from B to C is Total distance travelled/ Total time taken

= 400m/230s

= 1.74 m/s

However, the total displacement = 300 – 100 = 200m

Velocity = Total displacement/ total time taken

Thus, the velocity is 200m/230s

= 0.87 m/s
