Question ⤵️

What is effusion ?

\huge\underbrace\mathfrak{ANSWER}

  • Effusion is the process in which a gas escapes from a container through a hole of diameter considerably smaller than the mean free path of the molecules.
  • Effusion occurs when a gas passes through an opening that is smaller than the mean free path of the particles, that is, the average distance traveled between collisions. Effectively, this means that only one particle passes through at a time.

Additional Information :-

  1. The rate of effusion of a gaseous substance is inversely proportional to the square root of its molar mass. Thus the rate at which a molecule, or a mole of molecules, diffuses or effuses is directly related to the speed at which it moves.
  2. Example of Gas Effusion :-
  • A mixture of neon gas and argon gas is present in a container (container A). There are equal amounts of both gases in the container. A small pinhole is created in the container, allowing the gases to effuse into an empty container (container B).
