A galvanic cell or voltaic cell, named after Luigi Galvani or Alessandro Volta, respectively, is an electrochemical cell that derives electrical energy from spontaneous redox reactions taking place within the cell. It generally consists of two different metals immersed in electrolytes, or of individual half-cells with different metals and their ions in solution connected by a salt bridge or separated by a porous membrane.

Simple Voltaic Cell:

A simple voltaic cell was invented by a Alessandro Volta in year 1800. It was first device which could create a constant potential difference between two plates with the help of chemical energy.

It consists of two plates one of copper and the other of zinc provided with brass terminals.

The plates are placed in a glass vessel and the terminals are connected to a voltmeter through insulated copper wires. When dilute sulphuric acid is poured in the container the voltmeter records a potential difference of 1.10 volts.

Volta in his own time assume that copper is a positive terminal and zinc is a negative terminal and an electric current flows from copper to zinc in external circuit that is through copper wire.

This cell cannot give continuous current for more than ten minutes as it has very serious defects like local action and polarization.
