In the periodic table, with the introduction of transition elements between the s and p block elements, the nuclear charge between Calcium and Gallium got increased by ten units. These ten additional orbital electrons do not screen the outer electrons completely from the increased nuclear charge. Due to this increased nuclear charge{greater than what is expected], a group of related anomalous properties of the third row, p-block elements come into effect.
These are reduced size, [less than expected], high electronegativities, ionisation energies and high reduction potentials . This irregularity in the properties is collectively known as Middle row anomaly. [as the third row is almost the " middle row" of the periodic table, the word, middle row anomaly comes into effect.
