Definition:

When two pairs of traits are combined in a hybrid, segregation of one pair of characters is independent of the other pair of characters.

Now in simple words

In a dihybrid cross if the characters are of seed shape ( wrinkled or round ) and colour (green or yellow)

Then

A round seed can be green and it can also be of yellow colour . Similarly wrinkled seed can be of green or yellow colour which means that the segragation of traits of seed colour and seed shape has been independent of each other.
