The formula for magnification states that,

the height of the image and object,

distance from the lens to the image and distance of the object to the lens.

M =  \frac{height of the image}{height of the object\\} = \frac{distance from the lens image}{distance from the object of the lens}

therefore, M is nothing but magnification
