To play the flick shot, the ball has to be either a good length or full pitch ball on the leg or middle stump (Ideally if you dont want to shuffle back and across).

There are two ways of playing the flick shot.

Incase the ball is full: When the ball is full, you can go onto the front foot in the line of the ball, bring your bat from the wicket keeper’s direction, with your top hand, as soon as you are close to making contact with the ball, the bottom hand should take effect and generate power. On contact with the ball, the bottom wrist should roll in the direction of leg side. To keep the ball in the ground to avoid getting caught in mid wicket or square leg, the key is play a little late. If you are too late on the ball, you can get trapped in front of the wicket or get bowled. If you are a little late, you will not be able to time the ball and hence will not get value for your shot.

In case the ball is in good length: In this case you cannot go forward, as it will make you go under the ball, which you dont want. Rock you front foot a little behind, OR go back foot, in the line of the ball, bring your bat from the wicket keeper’s direction and let the ball hit the inner face of the bat. Roll the wrist on contact with the ball. It is important to remember that your head should be on top of the ball and the ball under your eyes.

The key is to not let the head fall in the off or point direction but should remain on top of the ball.

To see some classic flick shots, watch Mohammad Azharudding and Sachin Tendulkar’s flick shot. Azhar’s wrist has magic and sachin plays a great good length ball flick shot
