Functions of nutrients. At least 17 elements are known to be essential nutrients for plants. In relatively large amounts, the soil supplies nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur; these are often called the macronutrients.

FOOD

As we all know that all living organisms need food to survive so food is also essential for plants .plants prepare foods through the process of photosynthesis,by using simple substances like carbon -dioxide, in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. The food is made in the leaf as leaf are known as food factories of the plant.

MODES OF NUTRITION

plants prepare their food by using raw materials like water, carbon - dioxide and minerals.
There are two modes of nutrition -:
*autotrophic nutrition -The mode of nutrition where the organisms can prepare their own food. for example -green plants.
*Heterotrophic nutrition -The mode of nutrition where the organisms depends on autotrophic for their food, all the heterotrophs are consumers. for example -human beings and animals .

OTHER MODES OF NUTRITION

most of the plants have chlorophyll and can make their own food and some plants doesn't have chlorophyll and cannot synthesise their own food are known as Heterotrophic plants. The types of nutrition can be categorised into -:
*parasitic mode of nutrition.
*saprophytic mode of nutrition.
*insectivorous mode of nutrition.
*symbiotic mode of nutrition.

HOW THE NUTRIENTS ARE REPLENISHED
The continuous growing of crop in same field decreases the soil fertility, the fertility of the soil can be increased by using manure and fertiliser and also by growing leguminous plants.
