A semicolon (;) is a type of punctuation

The most common use of the semicolon is to join two independent clauses without using a conjunction like and.

Examples :

  1. We can go to the museum to do some research; Mondays are pretty quiet there.
  2. I love ice cream; it is my favorite food

Colons (:) are used in sentences to introduce that something follows like a quotation, example or a list.

Examples :

  1. He wanted to see three cities in Italy: Rome, Florence, and Venice
  2. Here are three states that begin with M: Michigan, Mississippi, and Maine.
