Answer:

The mutiny was also called sepoy mutiny because it was started by the sepoys or 'sipahis' (hindi for soldiers) when they were asked to used a new type of bullet catridge. Rumors spread that the catridge were made of cow and pig skin. Moreover, they were asked to put the catridge in their mouth before they could load it in the gun. The sepoys were mainly Hindus, who considered cows holy, and Muslims, who were repulsed by pigs, and so they were enraged for being forced to do things which their religions forbid. This led to the beginning of the rebellion which would mark the onset of a freedom struggle that would rage on for the next 90 years. This mutiny was only limited to the north-eastern part of India, and failed to gain momentum in other parts of the country.
