yes when electric current is passed through a circuit having compass needle , the needle deflects as when current passes through the wire some.magnetic effect is produced . compass needle also has a magnet fitting. due to which it deflects from its state of rest

when the key is closed i.e. the circuit is completed the electricity flows through it. due to flow of current , magnetic field is created across conducting wire. As the magnetic needle is kept in this field it experiences some magnetic power which makes it to deflect.
