Solution,

Number of days from August 1, 1959, to August 1, 1960 = 366(Leap Year)

Number of days from August 1, 1960, to August 1, 1961  = 365

Number of days from August 1, 1961, to August 1, 1962 = 365

Number of days from August 1, 1962, to April 1, 1963 = 243

Total number of days between August 1, 1959, and April 1, 1963 = $366+365+365+243 = 1339$

On the division of 1339 with 7(number of weekdays),

⇒ $\frac{1339}{7}$ = 191 + 2(remainder)

Thus starting from Monday, go back two days to get the day on which  August 1, 1959, fell that is Saturday. (backward direction as the day to be found is in the past year)

Henceforth, August 1, 1959, was Saturday.
