The main reason behind children in rural areas being helpful to their parents than children raised in urban areas is the difference in parenting style.

Villagers in rural areas tend to stick to the traditional parenting style wherein a parent’s instructions have to be followed no matter how uncomfortable it might make the children. So, when a child in a village is asked to fetch a bucket of water or feed the cows, the child is expected to do it without asking any questions or complaining. The child’s objections are met with scolding or even a beating. Thus, rural children grow accustomed to helping out their parents without feeling that they are doing anyone a favour.

Parents in rural areas have, over time, shifted to a friendlier parenting mode. Children are encouraged to ask questions and engage in interactive sessions. So, when a parent asks a child to do a chore, the child comes up with a counter question or even expresses disinterest in doing the task. Quite commonly, the child is allowed to skip the task. Reprimanding the child is not a pleasant task and hence is often avoided by busy rural parents. Over time, the child does not develop the habit of being helpful at home.
