The wurtz reaction is a coupling reaction used in the formation of alkanes. In the reaction two alkyl halides are combined with sodium to form an alkane. The reaction was named after Charles Adolphe-Wurtz. Other metals that can be used in place of sodium include; silver zinc and iron.

When an alkyl halide on treatment with sodium metal in dry ether give higher alkanes this is an process of wurtz Reaction.
