please explain wurtz reaction in an easy way.....??

2R–X + 2Na → R–R + 2NaX. It is used to form alkanes When alkyhalides are reacted with excess of sodium, alkanes are formed with NaX

Wurtz reaction- 2CH3I + 2Na = C2H6 + 2NaI in the above reaction we use ether which is neutral. This reaction only form alkanes with even no. Of carbon molecules and not for odd one eg CH4.
