Answer 1:-

The author was born free - free in every way that he could know. He was free to run in the fields near his mother's hut, free to swim in the clear stream, free to roast mealies under the stars and ride the broad backs of slow - moving bulls.

Answer 2:-

He began to learn that his childhood freedom was an illusion. He discovered that his freedom had already been taken from him. He began to hunger for it.
