The temperature of a place decreases with increasing altitude from the earth's surface. Since the direct source of atmospheric heat lies at the surface of the earth, the higher we ascend in the atmosphere, the lower the temperature is. Another reason for the temperature lowering with elevation is the fact that the lower layers of air near the surface are denser and contains more water vapor and dust particles the upper air. Since this substances absorb a large amount of terrestrial radiation, the lower part of the atmosphere has a higher temperature than the less dense and cleaner upper part.
