5( \frac{x}{x+1} )^2 - 4( \frac{x}{x+1}) - 1 = 0

let  \frac{x}{x+1} = y

Thus, 5y^2 + 4y - 1 = 0

By using the quadratic equation formula, -b (+/-)  \frac{ \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac} }{2a} = x

a = 5, b= 4, c = -1

x = -1, x = 1/5

But since it is given that x \neq -1

y =  \frac{1}{5}

 \frac{x}{x+1} = y

 \frac{x}{x+1} = \frac{1}{5}

Cross Multiplying gets us, [tex]5x = x + 1 4x = 1 x = \frac{1}{4} [/tex]
