GIVEN :-

  • The driver of a train A is moving at a speed of 30 m/s sights another train B moving on the same track towards his train at a speed of 10 m/s . He immediately applies brakes and achieve a uniform retardation of 4 m/s .

TO FIND :-

  • The minimum distance between the trains to avoid head - on Collision.

SOLUTION :-

we have ,

  • initial velocity , u = 30 m/s + 10 m/s = 40 m/s
  • Final velocity , v = 0 m/s [ brakes applied ]
  • Acceleration , a = -4 m/s² [ Retardation ]

By using third equation of motion

→ v² - u² = 2as

  • v = final velocity.
  • u = initial velocity.
  • a = acceleration.
  • s = distance covered.

→ (0)² - (40)² = 2 × (-4) × s

→ 0 - 1600 = -8s

→ -1600 = -8s

→ s = -1600/8

→ s = 200 m.

HenceThe minimum distance between the trains to avoid head - on Collision is 200 m.
