The transition metals (such as iron, copper, zinc, and nickel) are slower to oxidize because they form a passive layer of oxide that protects the interior. Others, like palladium, platinum and gold do not react with the atmosphere at all.

Different metals reacts in different rate with oxygen, water and dilute acid.
A) Some metals react with oxygen to form oxides.
metal + oxygen = metal oxide
Some metals react with water to form hydroxides and hydrogen gas. However, some metals do not react with water but steam to form metal oxides and hydrogen gas.
metal + water -- metal hydroxide + hydrogen gas
metal + steam -- metal oxide + hydrogen gas
while
Some metals react with dilute hydrochloric acid to form metal chloride and hydrogen gas.
Metal + dilute hydrochloric acid -- metal chloride + hydrogen
