Colonel Allyn was an eighty year old, tall man,
with a smooth face and white hair, looking as proud as Julius Caesar. His
clothes were frazzled. He along with his daughter lived in a huge house with
round white pillars about a thousand feet high, and the yard was so full of
rose-bushes and box-bushes and lilacs that you couldn't have seen the house if
it hadn't been as big as the Capitol at Washington. He belonged to the oldest
family in the State. He was very cheerful and jovial. His presence made the old,
dilapidated mansion look bright and alive. He was a good judge of human
character. He patiently listened to John’s story and immediately judged his
intentions. He was admirer of truthful and passionate men. He liked John and
soon struck a friendship with him. He took great pleasure in telling stories to
others. His laughter was quite hearty. On finding John a genuine and good human
being, he allowed his daughter to marry John.
