(a) Metallic oxides react with acids to give salts and water. Here metal displaces hydrogen in acid and forms a salt. Displaced hydrogen adds with oxygen in metal oxide to form water. This is similar to neutralisation reaction so metallic oxides are basic in nature.

(b) The oxides of non-metals are acidic. If a non-metal oxide dissolves in water, it will form an acid. The non-metal oxides can be neutralized with a base to form a salt and water.
