1) The men were on the roof top because there was a leopard coming from the riverside.

It was enacting a character from Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book.

4) The leopard behaved in such an extraordinary way because about three years ago the female leopard gave birth to two cubs in a sugarcane field. The villagers had spotted the family and told the forest officials. A few months later, the female leopard was caught and was taken to the zoo.  There was no report of the cubs. The people believed that the leopard that had been frequenting the cow every night and playing with it was one of the cubs.
