Answer:

the cost of pen = 48

and pencil = 16

Step-by-step explanation:

let the cost of a pen be x and the cost of a pencil be y

the cost of a pen is thrice the cost of a pencil, then the equation formed will be :

x = 3y .......... ( i )

the difference of the cost of a pen and a pencil is 32, then the equation formed will be:

x - y = 32 ...............( ii )

Now, putting the value of x from eq ( i ) :

3y - y = 32

2y = 32

y = 16

Now, putting the value of y in eq ( i ) :

x = 3×16

x = 48

the cost of a pen is 48.

and the cost of a pencil is 16.
