Olfactory indicators can be used in the laboratory to test whether a solution is a base or an acid, a process called olfactory titration.
Onion, clove oil and vanilla extract are examples.
Onion as olfactory indicator
Put some finely chopped onions in a plastic bag along with some clean cloth strips. Tie up the bag tightly and keep it over night in the fridge.
Check the odor of the cloth strips.
Keep two strips on a clean surface.
Put a few drops of dilute HCl on one strip and a few drops of dilute NaOH on the other.
Rinse both the strips separately with distilled water
Again check their odor .
