4. The factories in which the children worked were badly lit, stuffy and either boiling hot or freezing cold. No attempt was made to keep things safe for the workers. Sometimes the children didn't go home at the end of their shift but slept on the floor next to their machines. When they woke up in the morning by the sound of the whistle, they quickly ate a little watery porridge and commenced work again. They had no time to wash their faces, bathe or play with their friends.
