Tigers are apex predators, the top of the food chain. They eat large herbivores. Who in turn eat plants, That in turn provide food and shelter of smaller species.

Kill the tigers, the herbivores proliferate. They eat the plants, depriving other species of food and shelter. Predators that prey on those species, in turn, are adversely affected. Small rodents are happy, though and they proliferate. And so it goes.
