Answer:

Alkanes or paraffin (d)

Explanation:

It's simple... See

An alkane is a saturated hydrocarbon. Which means that the carbon atoms in an alkane have 4 single bonds. These hydrogen atoms can be removed and replaced (substituted) by another halogen or any other element. This is called substitution reaction. If an element has to be added, one of the hydrogen atoms will have to be removed to add the required element.

The other options are not capable of undergoing substitution reaction. Alkenes and alkynes undergo addition reaction as they are unsaturated hydrocarbons. They have double bonds which can be broken and another element added. Therefore it is called addition reaction.

As of carbon monoxide, that also, I believe undergoes addition and not substitution. Because it is not a saturated carbon and has enough electrons to spare to form bonds with other elements without having to substitute the oxygen atom.

Hope it helps!!

Answer:

(d) Alkanes

Substitution Reactions are Characteristic Reaction of Alkanes

Explanation:

Alkanes Show Substitution by Reaction by Replacing H Atom.

The other options are not capable of undergoing substitution reaction. Alkenes and alkynes undergo addition reaction as they are unsaturated hydrocarbons. They have double bonds which can be broken and another element added. Therefore it is called addition reaction.
