Question :

Which of the following graphs shows the variation of electric field E due to a hollow spherical conductor of radius R as a function of distance from the centre of the sphere.

Solution :

❖ Electric field intensity due to uniformly charged hollow conducting / non-conducting / solid conducting sphere is given by

(i) For r ≥ R, \underline{\boxed{\bf{\purple{\overrightarrow{E}=\dfrac{KQ}{|\overrightarrow{r}|^2}\hat{r}}}}}

(ii) For r < R, \underline{\boxed{\bf{\gray{E=0}}}}

Note :

• R is radius of the sphere.

\sf\overrightarrow{r} is vector drawn from centre of sphere to the point.

• Sphere acts like a point charge placed at centre for points outside the sphere.

\sf\overrightarrow{E} is always along radial direction.

• Q is the total charge.

(A) is the correct answer!

Knowledge BoosteR :

  • Electric field is the region around charged particle or charged body in which if another charge is placed, ot experiences electrostatic force.
  • It is a vector quantity. Its direction is the same as the force experienced by positive charge.
  • Direction of electric field due to positive charge is always away from it while due to negative charge always towards it.
