Answer:

a)

Area of the shaded part = 200m ^ 2

Area of the unshaded part = 108 m ^2

length of the outer box = 14 m

breadth of the outer box = 22m

then, area of the outer box= 14 x 22 = 308m^ 2

then,

length of inner box = 14 - (4x2)

= 6 m

breadth of inner box = 22 - (2x2)

= 18 m

then, area of the inner box / area of unshaded part = 6 x 18 = 108m^2.

then, area of the shaded part = area of the outer box - area of the inner box = 308 - 108 = 200m^ 2.

b)

length of the lawn = 24m

breadth of the lawn = 22m

area of the total lawn = 22 x 24 = 528m^ 2.

area of lawn parallel to length = 24 x 4 = 96 m^2

area of lawn parallel to breadth =22 x 4 = 88m^2.

area of portion of common path = 4x4 = 16.

area of the cross paths =

( 96 + 88 ) - 16

= 184 - 16

= 168m ^ 2.

then, area of unshaded part = total area of lawn - area of cross paths = 528 - 168 = 360 m ^ 2.
