A rectangular tank 30 cm × 20 cm × 12 cm contains water to a depth of 6 cm. A metal cube of side 10 cm is placed in the tank with its one face resting on the bottom of the tank. Find the volume of water, in litres, that must be poured in the tank so that the metal cube is just submerged in the water.

volume of cube=10 ³
=1000cm³
Volume of water in tank + Volume of cube=4600cm ³
height=h of water when volume is 4600 in the tank of length=30,breadth=20 is,
⇒30×20×h=4600
⇒h=7.667cm
Difference in height when cube submerged in tank=10−7.6667=2.333
Volume of water must be poured in tank=30×20×2.333=1399.98cm ³
=1.4litre
