i) If you spell meet and deep you will see that you will spell for a long time and besides that these two words contain the vowel 'e' twice so they are long words to spell and sit and put are two words which if you spell you will see that these words does not need long time to spell and besides that these words contain single vowels 'i' and 'u' which makes these two words to spell for a short time.

ii) Diphthong is a sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable, in which the sound begins as one vowel and moves towards another (as in coin, loud, and side ). So, among the four words Boy, up, near, shut, you will notice that only in the word near there are two vowels 'e' and 'a' and after e only a comes i.e., after one vowel the other vowel comes so, only near will be a diphthong among the four words in the question.
