Valmiki Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of the great poet and sage Valmiki. This celebration is more popular in North India than South India. However, it is not an official government holiday. Valmiki Jayanti is typically celebrated in between September and October during the Hindu Ashwin month on a full moon day.

On this day, people pay homages and respect to the great saint. He is worshipped with fill fervor on this day. Prayers are also offered to his portrait. In some villages and towns, various processions are held with his portrait being taken from place to place. Temples dedicated to Lord Ram are decorated with flowers and incense sticks are burnt to create a blissful atmosphere. Bhajans and kirtans are also held here to mark the occasion apart from recitations from the Ramayana.

Charity and donation are also done on a large scale on this day to help the needy and poor people. Doing these acts of kindness on Valmiki Jayanti is believed to be quite rewarding and fruitful.
