(a) Difference between potential and actual resources:
Potential Resources
(i) Those resources whose total quantity is not known.
(ii) They are not being used at present.
(iii) As technology improves their use in future is possible.
(iv) Uranium found in Ladakh is an example of potential resources.
Actual Resources
(i) Those resources whose total quantity is known.
(ii) They are being used at the present time.
(iii) Available technology is used to use these resources.
(iv) Rich deposits of coal in Rubr region of Germany is an example of actual resources.
b) Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development has continued to evolve as that of protecting the world’s resources while its true agenda is to control the world’s resources. Environmentally sustainable economic growth refers to economic development that meets the needs of all without leaving future generations with fewer natural resources than those we enjoy today.
The essence of this form of development is a stable relationship between human activities and the natural world, which does not diminish the prospects for future generations to enjoy a quality of life at least as good as our own.
c) Conservation of resources is the ethical use and protection of valuable resources, such as trees, minerals, wildlife, water and others. It focuses on maintaining the natural world in order to protect the sources of resources.
d) It is essential to have resource planning because of the following reasons:
It helps to identify the various resources present in different regions of the country.
It helps in the conservation of various non-renewable/extinguishable resources.
It helps in reducing wastage of resources.
It helps in equal distribution of resources among the regions that have acute shortage of it.
It helps in keeping track of remaining resources.
It helps to take care of future generations.
Thus, resource planning is necessary for sustaining quality of life and global peace.
e) When we use all types of resources gifted by nature and find a way of it's good uses without harming the environment. Then, it is called Resource Development.
