Child labourers are exploited, exposed to
hazardous work conditions and paid a pittance
for their long hours of work. They belong to
the unorganized labour force. The Constitution
of India says that:
(a) No child below the age of 14 years shall
be employed to work in any hazardous
employment
(b) Childhood and youth are to be protected
against exploitation and against moral and
material abandonment (Article 39 (f)).
(c) The State shall endeavour to provide
within a period of 10 year from the
commencement of the Constitution free and
compulsory education for all children until they
have completed the age of 14 years..
it is sad to know that India has the largest number of
children working as child labour in the world.
In rural areas, most of the child labourers are
engaged in agriculture. Many of them also
work in livestock, foresting and fishery
businesses. In the urban areas, children work
in small-scale industries, eating joints or as
helpers and cleaners. They also work as
domestic servants. It is disappointing that at
an age where they should study and play, they
are made to work for long hours that too in
unhygienic working conditions. The main
reason behind child labour is poverty. Children
born in poor families are forced to work not
only for their own survival but also for their
family. It is very important for all of us to help
such children. We need to make their families
aware that they should not compel children to
work.
