EQUABLE SHAPES

  • Equable shape: the geometric figure whose perimeter and area are numerically equal, is called an equable shape.

Solution:

  • The first figure is a rectangle:
  • Length = 4.5
  • Width = 3.6
  • Then,
  • Perimeter = 2 (4.5 + 3.6) = 16.2
  • Area = 4.5 × 3.6 = 16.2

  • Since the perimeter and the area of the rectangle have the same numerical value, the rectangle is an equable shape.

  • The second figure is a triangle:
  • Area = 1/2 * (3 + 3) * 4 = 12

  • The given triangle is divided into two right-angled triangles.

  • The hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is
  • = √(4² + 3²) = 5

  • Then the perimeter of the large triangle is
  • = 2 * 5 + 2 * 3 = 16

  • Since the area and the perimeter have different numerical value, the triangle is not an equable shape.
