mean = sum of all observations/ total number of observations
13=5n+40/5
65=5n+40
65-40=5n
25=5n

n = 25/5=5

It is given that the mean of 5 observations is 13.
Mean = sum of observations / total no : of observations
∴ sum of observations = Mean × total no : of observations
= 13 × 5 = 65
that is , x + x+4 + x + 8+ x+12+ x + 16 = 65
5 x + 40 = 65
5 x = 25
x = 25 ÷ 5 = 5
∴ x = 5
