(i) Mercury oxide, a red solid decomposes when heated to produce mercury and oxugen gas. A reaction is also considered to be decomposition reaction even when one or more products are still compounds. A metal carbonate decomposes into a metal oxide and carbon dioxide gas.

(ii) Sulphur dioxide will be prepared by the reaction of sulphuric acid with sodium sulphite to produce sodium sulphate, water and suplur dioxide......In step 1, nitric acid (NO) will be former by reaction oh sulphuric acid with sodium nitrite to produce sodium sulfate, water, sodium nitrite and nitric oxide.

(iii) Concentrated hydrochloric acid dissolves many metals and formed oxidizes metal chlorides and hydrogen gas. It also reacts with basic compounds such as, calcium carbonate and copper oxide, forming the dissolves chloride that can ne analyzed.
