Explanation:

Initial speed = u = 96 km/h = 96000 m / (60*60) s = 80/3 m/s

Final speed = v = 48 km/h = 48000 m / (60*60) s = 40/3 m/s

distance traveled = s = 800 m

Applying the formula v² = u² + 2as , where a = acceleration

=> a = (v² - u²)/(2s)

= {(1600-6400)/9 }/ 2(800)

= {-1600/3} / 1600

a = -1/3 m/s²

further distance traveled before coming to rest = s'

0 = v² + 2as'

s' = - v² / (2a)

= - (40/3)² / (- 2/3)

= (1600/9)*(3/2)

= 800 / 3 m

s' = 266.66 m

Time taken by train to stop after application of brakes: t

Using, v=u+at

Since, the train will ultimately stop, v=0.

0= 80/3 -1/3 t

1/3 t= 80/3

t = 80s
