Answer:

48 hours

Step-by-step explanation:

since, part of tank filled by Pipe in 12hrs = 1

so, part of tank filled by Pipe in 1 hr = \frac{1}{12}

Given that, Tank is filled in 16hrs when a waste pipe is opened which empties a tank.

Let us take "x" as the time taken by waste pipe to empty the tank.

so part of tank emptied by waste pipe = \frac{1}{x}

we can write it in this way :

 \frac{1}{12}  -  \frac{1}{x}  =  \frac{1}{16}

 =  >  \frac{1}{x}  =  \frac{1}{12}  -  \frac{1}{16}

taking LCM (12,16) we get 48 .

  =  >  \frac{1}{x}  =  \frac{4 - 3}{48}

 =  >  \frac{1}{x}  =  \frac{1}{48}

 =  > x = 48 \: hrs
