Ranga's Marriage by Masti Venkatesh Iyer is narrated by a concerned inhabitant of Hosahalli, Shyama. Before independence, located in the state of Mysore, Shyama was endowed by the beauty of the place and the people in it. The story is about a boy who receives his education from Bangalore and returns to his village. Son of the accountant, he lived in village Hoshali. Upon his return, the whole village gathers to see him. The boy did his tradition namaskar and all went. The reader is directly addressed by the speaker. Also, the narrator is the neighbor to the protagonist. The narrator begins the story by first providing a detailed description of the village. Later the narrator introduces Ranga who is the protagonist of the story. Since Ranga returned to the village after ten years, the village people gathered around Ranga to see him and began scrutinizing him. The people left disappointed, as Ranga was same as before. Later in the afternoon, at the narrator's home, Ranga reaches with oranges. The narrator suggests the boy get married and the boy presents his view upon what kind of girl he wants to marry. Being determined, the narrator decides to get Ranga married to Rama Rao's niece Ratna. Ratna knew how to play harmonium and veena. To it, the narrator formulates the plan and asks Rao's wife to send Ratna to Ranga's home in order to get buttermilk. While Ratna reaches there, Ranga asks Ratna to sing a song. Being fascinated by her voice, range reaches narrator's house and peeps into the house of the narrator. As he enters narrator's house, Ratna leaves. The boy was curious to know about the girl. The narrator plays with his words and informs him that the girl was married. Seeing the disappointment on the face of Ranga, the narrator was happy as his plan worked accordingly. To his plan, the narrator took Ranga to an astrologer, who was already guided by the narrator upon what to speak. The natal chart of Rangappa is read by the astrologer and declared that the girl whom the boy loves, her name is connected to the ocean. To which the narrator responded that it's Ratna. Next, the narrator took Ranga to the Rama Rao's house. Later, Ranga discovers that being in confusion, it was confirmed that the Ratna was not married. Ranga being attracted to the girl, they get married. At last, one day Ranga invites the narrator to his son's third birthday party. Ranga and Ratna names their son after the name of the narrator, Shyama.
