2. Arun and his sister Arunima are both teenagers. Arunima observes a swelling on her neck, following which she visits a doctor. The doctor identifies it to be a deficiency disease and prescribes medicines accordingly, along with suggesting dietary modifications. A few months later, Arun observes a small protrusion on his throat and visits the doctor. However, the doctor assures him that it is a normal feature in boys of his age.

(a) Identify the disease Arunima was suffering from along with its cause.

(b) Why do you think that no medication was prescribed for Arun?

Arunima is suffering from a thyroid problem GOITRE... deficiency disease due to loss of IODINE...
Arun got adams apple... normal for teenager boys... so no medication..

In this case, Arunima was suffering from Goitre which is as a result of iodine deficiency in her body. However, too much thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland can also result in Goitre.


Arun on the other hand had Adam’s apple which is found in male during puberty as a result of the growing larynx.


It becomes clearly visible when males attain adulthood. Females also have Adam’s apple but it is not prominently visible.


Adam’s apple is not a disease; hence, it doesn’t require any medical attention.
