Even if you go bellow that and form oxide you need to consider all the possible reaction in water, (especially alkaline solution as in Al-air or Zn-air)

The reduced oxygen species are more likely to abstract hydrogen and to form hydroxide, but even if you take peroxide as Li2O2 or superoxide as KO2 you will for hydroxide. Even thin Al2O3 (if formed) will dissolve in the alkaline KOH environment.
