Let no. of colours in flag be N and no. of spikes be S
By description of student 1 , 8 times the no. of colours in flag is equal to no. of spikes . So, :
8 * N = S
N = S/8 (1)
By description of student 2 , the sum of no. of colours of flag and the no. of spikes is 27. So, :
N + S = 27
N = 27 - S (2)
Putting value of N from (2) in (1)
27 - S = S/8
27 = S/8 + S
27 = S * (1/8 + 1)
27 = S * (9/8)
S * (9/8) = 27
S = 27 * (8/9)
S = 3 * 8
S = 24
