Object:

An object is a part of the sentence that receives the action given by the subject. There are two types of objects:

✳ Direct object

✳ Indirect object

⇒ Direct object

The direct object of a sentence answers the question what or who when asked to the subject. We get the answer directly. All sentences have a direct object.

An example:

Anu drinks juice. ----- Sentence

Anu drinks what? ----- Question

Juice ----- The answer as well as the direct object

⇒ Indirect object

The indirect object of a sentence is the secondary part which details the situation. It gives answers to the question to whom or for what. The part of the indirect object is not compulsory and can be omitted if required. An indirect object is always placed between a verb and an object.

An example:

Samuel submitted the invigilator his answer sheet. ----- Sentence

Samuel submitted his answer sheet to whom? ----- Question

The invigilator ----- The answer as well as the indirect object

⇒ Prepositional phrase

A prepositional phrase is a small phrase which contains a preposition. It also gives information when asked to whom but it is located at the end of the sentence, after the direct object. Hence, it cannot be taken as an indirect object and must be called prepositional phrase itself.

For example,

They gave the pen to Avantika. ----- Sentence

They gave the pen to whom? ------ Question

To Avantika ----- Answer and the prepositional phrase [notice the preposition to in the sentence]
