No. of electrons left to complete an octet and the element to become stable is called valence electron.

For example

Atomic number of Beryllium is 4

No.Electron capacity of K shell is 2

No. electron capacity of L shell is 8

Explanation:

So there will be 2 electron in 1st shell.

There will be 2 electrons in 2nd shell but it's capacity is 8 .Therefore it will prefer giving 2 electrons instead of taking 6 to become stable.It's octet will be completed.

So it's valency is 2
