Answer:

Earth has a spherical shape. So the Sunrays land on the curvature. The equatorial region happens to be the most bulged region. In this region the Sunrays react the earth at near perpendicular angle. So the concentration of rays lighting up will be the highest.

The curvature gets steeper on northern and southern side of the equatorial region. The Sunrays have to travel little extra distance to reach the land mass. Besides the angle of incidence is acute / less than 90° so the concentration of the incident ray goes down.

This variance in concentration of Sunrays gives rise to differential heating.
