remember, you can do anything to an equaiton as long as you do it to both sides

first we need to distribute
rmember that a(b+c)=ab+ac

so
2(w-1)=2w-2 and
10(w+7)=10w+70

so
2(w-1)-9=10(w+7)-1
distribute
2w-2-9=10w+70-1
add like terms
2w-11=10w+69
minus 2w from both sides
-11=8w+69
minus 69 from both sides
-80=8w
divide both sides by 8
-10=w
w=-10
