Area of the shaded region=Area of the rectangle-Area of the small semicircle

 area \: of \: rectangle = l \times b

l = 8 \\ b = 2

 = 8 \times 2

 = 16cm {}^{2}

area \: of \: semicircle = 1 \div 2r {} {}^{2}\pi

 = 1 \div 2 \ 3.14  \times 4 \times 4

 = 176 \div 7

 = 25.14cm {}^{2}

 = area \: of \: the \: shaded \: portion = 16cm {}^{2} - 25.14cm {}^{2}

 = 9.14cm {}^{2}

area \: of \: the \: shaded \: portion = 9.14cm {}^{2}
