(i) Aurangzeb had banned the playing of pungi because playing it caused an unpleasant sound.

(ii) Shehnai was known as an improved version of pungi. This is because shehnai has better tonal quality than pungi. It is a hollow stem pipe which is longer and broader than a pungi. It consists of seven holes.

(iii) The shehnai was played in royal courts, wedding, temples, etc. Bismillah Khan changed this tradition by bringing this instrument on classical stages.

(iv) Bismillah Khan got his big break in the year 1938 after playing the shehnai on the radio on the occasion of the opening of the All India Radio at Lucknow.

(v) Bismillah Khan played the shehnai on 15th August 1947 at the Red Fort. This event was known historical since this was the day India got Independence from the Britishers.

(vi) Bismillah Khan refused to start a school in which shehnai is taught in the USA since he didn't want to leave India.

(vii) The two instances that shows Bismillah Khans's love for India and Banaras are:

  • Bismillah Khan refused the offer to teach shehnai in the USA because of his love for his country.
